Color, Colors

Color, Colors doesn’t go looking for contrast the way some of my other pieces do. It stays inside one chromatic family and just keeps turning it over — blue and teal as the ground it keeps coming back to, with pink, gold, magenta and red breaking through in bursts, never quite taking over.

The paint sits thick on the surface, almost sculptural in places, and there’s a lot of white left showing through — the colour never fills the whole frame, it just gathers in clusters and lets the rest breathe. Watching it, that balance keeps shifting: sometimes the blue crowds in and takes over most of the space, other times it thins out and the warm colours flood forward instead.

I called it Color, Colors because that’s really all it is, and all I wanted it to be — no subject standing in for something else, just colour allowed to be the whole point. It’s the simplest idea I’ve worked with, and maybe the one I keep coming back to the most.
